Rutin (quercetin-3-rutinoside) is a flavonoid found in buckwheat, citrus, and berries; gut bacteria metabolize most of an oral dose, so little is absorbed intact7, 8. It is taken for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, which drives interest in venous symptoms, postoperative inflammation and pain, and metabolic health. Hydroxyethyl rutoside has been tested for leg symptoms in pregnancy varicosis9. The typical patient is recovering from surgery or has type 2 diabetes.

Because these are fixed combinations, effects cannot be assigned to rutoside alone. With vitamin C in type 2 diabetes, fasting glucose fell relative to controls without a change in glycated hemoglobin. A 2026 meta-analysis of animal studies found rutin improved kidney function markers in diabetic nephropathy models; no human data support this yet10. Products listing rutin are numerous in the US label database, mostly standalone tablets and capsules plus enzyme and flavonoid blends; see Form comparison.

Some US product labels advise against use in pregnancy and nursing6.
