Phosphatidylcholine is the primary membrane lipid and the major component of lecithin3. It supplies choline for membrane integrity and for acetylcholine, a messenger involved in learning and memory3. Uses that follow include ulcerative colitis, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, memory in older adults, and mood stability in bipolar disorder.

A meta-analysis of randomized trials of delayed-release lecithin in ulcerative colitis found better remission and clinical and endoscopic outcomes than placebo, while a trial of a higher-purity preparation failed1. In fatty liver disease, adding liraglutide to polyene phosphatidylcholine lowered liver enzymes more than polyene phosphatidylcholine alone2. Short trials in Alzheimer disease show no cognitive benefit, and a company-sponsored trial of egg-derived product found only a small gain in verbal memory in older adults3. A 2026 narrative review reported that lipid-soluble choline forms, including phosphatidylcholine, support gut barrier and immune signaling, though human trials remain limited6. Products listing phosphatidylcholine come mostly as softgels, liquids, capsules, and powders; see Form comparison.

Ten of 30 sampled product labels declare soy, so allergy to the source material is the practical concern5. Five of 30 labels tell patients planning surgery to consult a doctor first5.
