Pea protein is a concentrate or isolate extracted from yellow pea (Pisum sativum), used as a plant-based source of amino acids11. Ileal amino acid digestibility of the isolate in healthy adults was comparable to casein12. People take it to support muscle gain alongside resistance training and, with fewer trials, postprandial glucose control. Typical users avoid dairy or animal protein. Combination products with xyloglucan are also studied in irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D)6 and functional bloating.

In sedentary adults training with weights, pea protein produced strength and muscle mass gains comparable to whey. A network meta-analysis ranked pea among the leading sources for acute muscle protein synthesis, though only whey reached statistical significance13. In healthy adults, a 2026 exploratory intervention study found rising pea protein isolate intake increased fecal calprotectin, a gut inflammation marker, in a subset of participants; no controlled trial has replicated it14. More than 28,000 products list pea protein, and the sampled products are all powders; see Form comparison.

Health Canada labels ask for a practitioner's advice before use in pregnancy or breastfeeding15 and in liver or kidney disease15.

  • SafetyWho should avoid it, who needs extra care, and the side effects reported in studies.
  • Protocol notesThe doses used in studies, how and when they were taken, and how the forms on the market compare.
  • How it worksWhat it is and how it works in the body, in plain terms.
  • Published studiesThe studies behind each use, popular claims checked against them, and trials still under way.
  • Word of mouthWhat patients and practitioners report online, kept separate from the clinical evidence.
  • Clinical perspectiveA closing read of where the evidence is solid, where it is thin, and what has not been studied.
