Nopal, the pad of the prickly pear cactus Opuntia ficus-indica, is a fiber-rich food plant that also carries betalain pigments and antioxidants.
The lipid evidence differs by plant part: a systematic review linked fruit consumption to lower total cholesterol in nearly all studies, while cladode effects were small3. The meta-analysis found no significant weight effect and reported gastric intolerance and flu symptoms as adverse events2. A randomized trial in gut dysbiosis reported microbiota shifts and improved gastrointestinal symptoms5. A 2026 narrative review found preclinical studies consistently report improved hepatic steatosis and glucose homeostasis with prickly pear fruit, while human trials remain small and short10. There are 694 products listing nopal cactus, mostly capsules, with powders and liquids; see Form comparison.
On pregnancy, Health Canada lists a label statement asking for a health care practitioner's advice before use in pregnancy or breastfeeding11. United States product labels ask diabetes medication users to check with their doctor, since glucose and insulin needs may change9.
