Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a vitamin B3-derived intermediate that feeds biosynthesis of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)8. Supplementation aims to restore NAD+, which is thought to decline with age, and is taken for healthy aging, physical performance, and cardiometabolic markers such as blood pressure and lipids. Oocyte quality is a further use, supported so far by animal work9. The typical patient is a middle-aged or older adult.
Human trials consistently show higher blood NAD levels and good tolerability, but functional and metabolic outcomes are mostly null or endpoint-specific5, 10. In adults over 60, a meta-analysis found no effect on muscle mass or function11. In a 2026 mouse study, NMN attenuated aortic dilation in an aneurysm model; no human trial has tested it. Products listing NMN number 282 in United States label data, mostly capsules and powders, and a microcrystalline polymorph is used in clinical trials; see Form comparison12.
Health Canada labels ask for a practitioner's advice before use in diabetes6. Some Health Canada-licensed products also state that pregnant or breastfeeding patients should not use them6.
