Mucuna pruriens (velvet bean, kapikachhu) is a tropical legume whose seeds contain levodopa, the dopamine precursor that drives most supplementation. It is used as a levodopa source in Parkinson's disease, chiefly where marketed levodopa is unaffordable, and in Ayurveda for male infertility and as an aphrodisiac. A multi-herb formula containing it has been tested for smoking cessation4.

In Parkinson's disease, randomized crossover trials found single doses of mucuna seed powder comparable to standard levodopa on motor response, with a longer symptom-controlled period1, 6, 7. Daily use is less settled: a 12-month open-label trial found similar outcomes to levodopa with more frequent adverse events, and a 16-week crossover pilot saw many patients stop early for gastrointestinal effects. In a 2026 laboratory analysis of commercial preparations, measured levodopa content fell below manufacturer-reported values; no trial has tested whether this changes clinical response. More than one thousand products list Mucuna pruriens, mostly as capsules and powders; see Form comparison.

Because the effect is levodopa's, a case report described dopamine dysregulation syndrome after mucuna was added to carbidopa-levodopa8. Health Canada labels ask for practitioner advice before use alongside other medications9 and in Parkinson's disease or psychosis9.
