Molecular hydrogen is a gas taken dissolved in water, as hydrogen-rich saline, or by inhalation, and is thought to protect cells as an antioxidant against oxidative stress12. Supplementation is driven by that antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, and the uses follow from it: exercise fatigue and muscle recovery in athletes, and metabolic markers such as uric acid and appetite in obesity. Nasal irrigation after sinus surgery is a further use9. It is also taken for healthy aging, where the trials are few13.

Meta-analyses in healthy adults find small reductions in perceived exertion and blood lactate, with no gain in aerobic capacity2. Trials in fatty liver and obesity are small and short, with mostly non-significant trends14. Short-term cognitive studies have not shown clear benefit12. A 2026 systematic review of dietary interventions for interstitial cystitis found hydrogen-rich water had nonsignificant effects on every outcome in small, short-term trials15. Nearly two thousand products list molecular hydrogen, most often as tablets that generate hydrogen in water, ready-to-drink pouches, or infusion machines; see Form comparison12.

Safety is rated low risk for long-term use12. One crossover trial found rapid intake of a large volume raised eye pressure more often than placebo, and its authors call for study in glaucoma before conclusions are drawn16. Per one product label, consultation with a licensed health care professional is asked before use with certain medications or conditions11.

  • When to useThe situations practitioners use it for, each with the reason and the study behind it.
  • SafetyWho should avoid it, who needs extra care, and the side effects reported in studies.
  • InteractionsThe medicines and supplements it interacts with, the effect of each, and what labeling says to watch.
  • Protocol notesThe doses used in studies, how and when they were taken, and how the forms on the market compare.
  • How it worksWhat it is and how it works in the body, in plain terms.
  • Published studiesThe studies behind each use, popular claims checked against them, and trials still under way.
  • Word of mouthWhat patients and practitioners report online, kept separate from the clinical evidence.
  • Clinical perspectiveA closing read of where the evidence is solid, where it is thin, and what has not been studied.
