Magnesium taurate pairs magnesium with taurine.2 Magnesium is a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems and moves calcium and potassium across cell membranes2. Supplementation aims at low magnesium status, and the uses that follow are blood pressure1, migraine prevention2, glycemic control in type 2 diabetes3, and sleep or anxiety8. Older adults and people with gastrointestinal disease, type 2 diabetes, or alcohol dependence are most likely to have inadequate status2.
A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized trials found lower blood pressure in hypertensive and hypomagnesemic groups but not in normotensive ones, with high heterogeneity1. The effect on glycated hemoglobin in type 2 diabetes was minimal3. These trials studied magnesium broadly, not the taurate form. In a 2022 longitudinal cohort of adults, higher magnesium intake was associated with less short sleep, while randomized trials of supplementation have been inconsistent4, 10. Products listing Magnesium Taurate are sold mainly as capsules and tablets, and absorption differs by magnesium form; see Form comparison.
Excess magnesium is cleared by the kidneys, which is why impaired renal function raises toxicity risk2. The National Institutes of Health fact sheet describes interactions with oral bisphosphonates, tetracyclines, and quinolone antibiotics and asks people on regular medications to discuss magnesium intake with their health care providers2.
