Limosilactobacillus fermentum is a lactic acid-producing probiotic species whose strains are studied for immune modulation, antimicrobial peptide production, and gut barrier support13. It acts through competitive exclusion, barrier enhancement, and immune modulation14. Use follows the strain. Trials cover gastrointestinal infections in formula-fed infants, respiratory illness in endurance athletes, body fat in overweight adults, and vaginal flora and vulvovaginal candidiasis.
Evidence is strain-specific and does not transfer across products. A strain given in a cholesterol trial produced no significant change in serum lipids15. In Helicobacter pylori therapy, a strain did not change eradication but improved digestive symptoms10. A dose-comparison trial in preterm infants found no difference in necrotizing enterocolitis between two doses16. In 2025, a crossover trial of a heat-treated strain found lower serum alcohol, acetaldehyde, and hangover scores after an alcohol challenge; no trial has replicated it. Products are mostly capsules, with some powders; strain and viability differ (see Form comparison).
Health Canada lists immune-compromised conditions as a contraindication on licensed single-ingredient products11. Those labels also ask users to consult a practitioner before use with fever or bloody diarrhoea11.
