Kudzu is the root of Pueraria lobata (also classed as Pueraria montana), a Chinese medicine herb whose isoflavones, chiefly puerarin, are thought to drive its effects6, 8. Its estrogen-like activity6 underlies its use for menopausal symptoms. People also take it to reduce alcohol intake in heavy drinkers1, 9 and, in Chinese multi-herb formulas, for glycemic control in type 2 diabetes. Typical users are heavy or binge drinkers and perimenopausal or postmenopausal women.

The alcohol data are the most consistent in non-treatment-seeking drinkers, but a recent placebo-controlled trial in treatment-seeking adults receiving counseling found kudzu no better than placebo10. An open-label dose-ranging study in postmenopausal women reported lower menopausal symptom scores, while a systematic review found the evidence of benefit for any condition limited and unclear6. A 2023 systematic review of preclinical studies found puerarin neuroprotective in animal models of neurological disorders and called for randomized trials in patients11. Kudzu products come as capsules, tablets, powders, and liquids; see Form comparison.

The consequential caution follows from the estrogenic activity: hormone-sensitive cancers and tamoxifen use are the stated reasons the guide gives for not taking kudzu6. Health Canada labels ask people taking prescription medications to consult a health care practitioner before use7.
