Haritaki is the dried fruit of Terminalia chebula (chebulic myrobalan), a staple of Ayurvedic, Unani, and Siddha practice, studied for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity9. People take it for joint comfort, where a standardized extract was tested in overweight adults with activity-related knee discomfort. It is also used as a mouthrinse for oral bacterial load, as a topical for skin pigmentation, and in blended extracts for memory complaints and immune function.
Human trials are mostly small and short, and several test blends rather than haritaki alone. The joint trial found improved knee outcomes against placebo1. Two small mouthrinse trials in children reported lower salivary Streptococcus mutans after a Terminalia chebula rinse. In one, the herbal rinse reduced counts more than chlorhexidine2, 3. A 2026 systematic review of in vitro studies found fruit extracts active against multidrug-resistant bacteria, with some synergy alongside antibiotics, and no human trial has tested this. Products listing haritaki number in the hundreds and come as capsules, tablets, and powders; see Form comparison.
Safety markers stayed within normal limits in the joint trial1. A guggulu and triphala combination produced hypersensitivity rash in a few participants8.
