Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the central nervous system, and supplements aim to borrow that calming signal. Supplementation has been studied alongside exercise for body composition in women with obesity, with modest within-group improvements but no clear differences from placebo4. Trial participants were mostly women with overweight or obesity who were exercising1, 4.

One randomized trial reported better sleep efficiency and lower depression scores after supplementation1. A similar trial found no between-group differences in body mass or fat mass4. In type 1 diabetes, randomized trials in children and adults found no preservation of beta-cell function5, 6. In adults with sleep problems, a 2026 single-arm study of GABA with L-theanine found improved sleep scores; no randomized trial has confirmed it7. Products listing GABA are mostly capsules, with powders and a liquid also sold; see Form comparison.

A 2025 trial in long-standing type 1 diabetes reported elevated aspartate aminotransferase in some participants, with two withdrawals6. Health Canada lists practitioner consultation before use in pregnancy or breastfeeding3, and a caution against use with alcohol on 11 of 45 licensed products3.

  • When to useThe situations practitioners use it for, each with the reason and the study behind it.
  • SafetyWho should avoid it, who needs extra care, and the side effects reported in studies.
  • InteractionsThe medicines and supplements it interacts with, the effect of each, and what labeling says to watch.
  • Protocol notesThe doses used in studies, how and when they were taken, and how the forms on the market compare.
  • How it worksWhat it is and how it works in the body, in plain terms.
  • Published studiesThe studies behind each use, popular claims checked against them, and trials still under way.
  • Word of mouthWhat patients and practitioners report online, kept separate from the clinical evidence.
  • Clinical perspectiveA closing read of where the evidence is solid, where it is thin, and what has not been studied.
