Chondroitin sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan in the extracellular matrix of cartilage, and supplements are extracted from animal tissue12. Oral use aims to support cartilage matrix and limit joint degradation, chiefly in knee osteoarthritis, for pain, function, and joint space preservation13. Adults with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis are the typical users, most often taking it together with glucosamine14.
The evidence is mixed. A Cochrane review found a small to moderate short-term pain benefit in mostly low-quality trials, and a meta-analysis found slower joint space narrowing. Another trial found chondroitin plus glucosamine comparable to celecoxib for pain15. Product purity and source may explain the inconsistent results13. A 2023 scoping review of tendinopathy supplements found sparse studies, mostly proprietary blends containing chondroitin, so its separate contribution is not isolated. Products listing chondroitin are mostly capsules combined with glucosamine; see Form comparison.
Trials report good tolerability. Health Canada labels on licensed single-ingredient products ask for a practitioner's advice before use in pregnancy or breastfeeding11.
