Carnosine (beta-alanyl-L-histidine) is a dipeptide of beta-alanine and histidine found in skeletal muscle and brain, acting through antioxidant, antiglycation, and metal-chelating activity9, 10. Supplementation is used to counter oxidative and glycation stress, with uses that follow in glycemic control in type 2 diabetes1, 2, adjunctive care of depressive symptoms4, and delayed recall. Zinc-L-carnosine, a separate complex, is used for gastrointestinal and oral mucosal protection.
A meta-analysis of randomized trials in children with autism spectrum disorder found no difference from placebo. Results remain inconclusive for senile cataracts, cardiovascular disease, and schizophrenia9. A 2026 randomized trial in prediabetes or well-controlled type 2 diabetes found modestly lower depressive symptom scores than placebo, with larger cohorts still needed11. There are 501 products listing L-carnosine, nearly all capsules, sold as carnosine alone or as zinc-L-carnosine; see Form comparison.
Health Canada lists a caution to consult a healthcare practitioner before use in pregnancy or breastfeeding on three of five licensed single-ingredient products12.
