Bifidobacterium bifidum is a probiotic species native to the human gut, taken to shift the intestinal microbiota toward a healthier balance.3, 5 Supplementation is used for irritable bowel syndrome1, 2 and for constipation and gastrointestinal symptoms, including in type 2 diabetes3–5. It is also used alongside antibiotic therapy for Helicobacter pylori6, and for immune function and common cold episodes, where trials are few. Typical patients are adults with functional bowel symptoms.
Evidence is strain-specific. B. bifidum MIMBb75 outperformed placebo for irritable bowel syndrome in a 2011 trial with live cells and a 2020 trial with heat-inactivated cells. Constipation results are mixed: a 2026 randomized trial of strain G9-1 found no significant gain in overall quality of life11. In elderly ischemic stroke patients, a 2024 retrospective study linked supplementation to better neurological scores and lower inflammatory markers; no randomized trial has tested it. More than four thousand products listing B. bifidum are on the market, mostly capsules, powders, and chewables, often paired with Lactobacillus acidophilus; see Form comparison.
The main caution concerns live organisms in vulnerable patients; heat-inactivated cells were studied partly because of infection concerns in susceptible groups2. Health Canada labels for licensed single-ingredient products say not to use with immune-compromised conditions, including long-term corticosteroid treatment9. Health Canada labels also ask for a practitioner's advice before use with fever, vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, or severe abdominal pain9.
