Terminalia bellirica · Bahera · Beleric Myrobalan

Snapshot

IndicationsContraindications
  • Oral antimicrobial support1
  • LDL oxidation inhibition2
  • Macrophage inflammatory response2

Human research is limited to one small crossover trial covering oral antimicrobial activity and one in-vitro study on lipid oxidation and macrophage inflammation. A 2016 in-vitro study found that Terminalia bellirica extract inhibited low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and suppressed pro-inflammatory gene expression in macrophages, with no human trial yet replicating these effects2. A crossover trial found that a rinse containing T. bellirica reduced salivary Streptococcus mutans colony-forming units, though Triphala as a combination outperformed the individual constituent1. With 756 products listing Bibhitaki on the market, it is available primarily in liquid, powder, and capsule forms, most often as part of Triphala blends; see Form comparison.

No authoritative guideline contraindication is documented for this ingredient; the absence of safety data in pregnancy and pediatric populations represents an unstudied gap rather than a confirmed harm.
