Zeolite (clinoptilolite) is a porous mineral with adsorption and ion-exchange capacity that may bind toxins in the gut, based mainly on animal studies8. They are taken to limit absorption of ingested contaminants, and the uses follow from that: dietary aflatoxin exposure, lead uptake, and diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. Modified zeolite is also studied as an adjunct for chemotherapy-induced neuropathy and for osteoporosis. The typical patient is someone with a food-borne or environmental toxin burden.
A tracer trial in healthy adults found purified clinoptilolite sharply reduced enteral lead uptake3. In diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, a pilot trial found benefit on some symptoms while the primary responder outcome matched placebo4. In a 2020 in vitro digestion experiment, bentonite, clinoptilolite, and montmorillonite also adsorbed amino acids and B vitamins, a finding not tested in humans9. Products listing bentonite or zeolite are mostly clay powders and purified or modified clinoptilolite; see Form comparison.
Fibrous zeolites such as erionite are classified as respiratory carcinogens, which is why mineral identity and purification matter10.

- InteractionsThe medicines and supplements it interacts with, the effect of each, and what labeling says to watch.
- Protocol notesThe doses used in studies, how and when they were taken, and how the forms on the market compare.
- How it worksWhat it is and how it works in the body, in plain terms.
- Published studiesThe studies behind each use, popular claims checked against them, and trials still under way.
- Word of mouthWhat patients and practitioners report online, kept separate from the clinical evidence.
- Clinical perspectiveA closing read of where the evidence is solid, where it is thin, and what has not been studied.
